Textbook:
Course Outline: The module covers introduction of mathematical models in science, applied science, engineering, industry and social science; analytical and numerical methods to study mathematical models; and applications. Mathematical models including discrete models, continuous models, optimization models, probability models, stochastic models etc. will be touched. Analytical methods on nondimensionalization, asymptotics, perturbation methods, etc.; and numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs), finite difference method for partial differential equations (PDEs) and Monte Carlo simulation will be introduced for studying mathematical models. Furthermore, mathematical software, e.g. Matlab, Mathematica or Maple, DXML will be briefed. Detail Outline
Grading: The course grade will be calculated as follows: Final exam: 50%; Projects and Homework assignments: 50%.
