  • The final is on Fri 3-6pm at WLH 2001.

    Course Information

    This is a course on Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE). Differential equations are important because the laws of nature are typically expressed as differential equations. Indeed, whenever one uses mathematical models to study some phenomena (eg. in economics), differential equations are involved. The main purpose of the course is to introduce some basic techniques for solving linear ODE's, or at least to gain a qualitative understanding of their behaviour.

  • Class time and Location: MWF 3-3:50 pm at Warren Lecture Hall 2001.
  • Textbook: Elementary Differential Equations (8th Edition), by W. Boyce and R. DiPrima
  • Reading: it will be very helpful if you have read through the relevant sections of the textbook before each class (see the calender below for the schedule).

  • MATLAB: there will be MatLab assignments given by your TA's. For this, see Matlab Computer Lab Assignments. The MATLAB location is at CLICS (in Galbraith Hall). Click the links for directions and hours .

  • Homework and Exams: see below
  • Grades will be computed based on the following scheme: HW 20%, Matlab 5%, Midterm 30%, Final 45%.

    Exams

    There will be 3 midterms and a final exam.

  • All exams are close-book, close-notes. No calculator is allowed.

  • Final Exam: The final exam will be on Dec 14 (Fri) 3-6pm in WLH 2001. Here is a sample final. Here is the solution.
  • Midterms: Will be held during the lecture hour on the following dates. I will take your 2 best midterm scores for the computation of the final grade, so you are allowed to drop one of your midterm scores. Here are the midterm dates and the chapters of the book they cover:

    (i) Oct 19 (Fri): Sections 1.1-1.3, Sections 2.1-2.6. Here is a couple of sample midterms: Sample 1 and Sample 2 (ignore Qn 5). Here is the solution to the actual midterm.

    (ii) Nov 9 (Fri): Sections 3.1-3.6. Here is a sample midterm . Here is the solution to the actual midterm.

  • Student ID is required to take the exams. Students without ID will not be allowed to take the exams.
  • (Absolutely) NO make-up exams.


  • Homework

    There will be weekly homework assignments, which you can find below.

  • Homework is due in the dropbox of your TA by Fridays 12pm.
  • Late homework will not be accepted.
  • I will pick your 5 best homework scores for the computation of your final grade.

  • It is very important that you attempt all the homework, since it is almost impossible to learn the subject matter without doing many problems.
  • Please write legibly on your homework. You will be judged by what you put down on paper.
  • We encourage you to work together on the exercises. Any assignment, though, should represent your own work (i.e. you should write it up yourself).
