TEXTS: Berlinghoff, Grant and Skrien, A Mathematics Sampler: Topics for the
Liberal Arts, 4th ed.
COURSE CONTENT: The material for the course will include Number Theory,
Probability and Four-dimensional Geometry, roughly Chapters 2, 4 and 7 of the
textbook.
LECTURE: MWF 12, DRL A2
OFFICE HOURS: Besides the hours listed above, we are also available at
other times by appointment. Please take advantage of these opportunities
for help. Come in so that we can get to know you.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Your grade for the course will be based on
homeworks---40 points;
quizzes---20 points;
recitations---10 points;
final exam---30 points.
HOMEWORKS: There will be six
homework assignments. They will be handed out on Tuesdays, September 23,
October 7 and 21, November 4 and 18 and December 2. The homework assignments
will be due the next Tuesday after they are handed out. No late homeworks will
be accepted. However, your lowest homework score will be dropped.
QUIZZES: Every week during recitation there will be a 5-10 minute quiz.
FINAL EXAM: The final exam is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday December 16
from 11 am to 1 pm. The exam is closed book. No calculator is allowed but a 5"
by 7" card of notes is permitted.
NOTE: Incompletes (I's) will not be given to avoid F's.
