## Lecture Notes: Friday, November 6, 1998

Ninth Homework
Assignment - for discussion at recitations on** **Tuesday November
10, and Thursday November 12.

**For Chapter #5 Review, the old final exam problems from
assignment # 8 are particularly important. Be sure to solve all of
these. Work in study groups, ask about them in recitation, and Sunday
review. Come in to see me if you have questions.**

### Chapter 6 Section 2 (Integration by Substitution)

Integration by substitution is related to the chain rule for
differentiation.

where F'(x) = f(x).

Let u = g(x). Then

Thus you can compute
by first computing
and then replacing u by g(x).

The trick is to identify the function u = g(x) that simplifies the
integrand.
