### Chapter 12 Sections 1 and 2: Angles and Trig Functions

#### Quick Review of Trigonometry

• definitions of the six trigonometric functions
• graphs of these functions using MAPLE
• periodicity
• some important identities

Third Homework Assignment - for discussion at recitations the week of Sept 28.

### Chapter 3

• Section 1 (Basic Rules of Differentiation)
• Section 2 (The Product and Quotient Rules)

• derivative of a constant function is zero (did in class last week)
• derivative of x^n for any real number n ( did x^2 in class last week)
• special case of sqrt(x)
• derivative of c*f(x)
• derivative of f(x) +/- g(x)
• derivative of f(x)*g(x) (product rule)
• derivative of f(x)/g(x) (quotient rule)
• some examples:
• tangent line to 1/sqrt(x) at (16,1/4)
• derivative of sin(x)*x^(2/3)
• assume we know sin'(x) = cos(x)
• derivative of (3*x^(-5/4))/(4*x^3 - x^2 + 2)
• compute derivative rule for x^3.
