Meet Wong Li Xuan – Bachelor of Science, Data Science & Economics (Double Degree Programme)

Although I pursued a degree in Data Science and Economics, I chose to take many Mathematics courses because of my passion for the subject—and because I quickly realised how essential math is to both fields. From statistics and linear algebra to optimization and analysis, these courses provided the theoretical depth that helped me understand and apply data science and economic concepts more effectively.

The mathematical training I received shaped the way I think: it taught me to break down complex problems, reason rigorously, and communicate precisely. These skills were valuable not only in my coursework, but also in internships and projects where I had to navigate real-world data and decisions.

NUS gave me the freedom to explore these interests deeply. The rigorous academic environment, supportive professors, and diverse learning opportunities all pushed me to grow—not just as a student, but as a problem solver.

To prospective students: Even if you’re not majoring in Mathematics, I highly encourage you to take math seriously. It’s a powerful toolkit that can elevate your thinking and give you an edge in any analytical field.
