My learning journey with NUS Mathematics started back in junior college, when I took H3 Maths and discovered a real interest in applied mathematics and modelling. I chose to study at NUS because of its strong global reputation and the Department’s focus on both academic rigour and research excellence – there seemed no better place to deepen my passion for maths.
Along the way, I decided to pursue a second major in Computer Science, mainly because I was curious about algorithms and coding. I also went on a Student Exchange Programme in Hong Kong, which gave me the chance to meet people from different cultures and step out of my comfort zone. On the academic side, I completed two research projects—one for my capstone and one for my specialisation – so I could explore more deeply the intersection of mathematics, programming, and quantitative finance.
One thing I really appreciated was how flexible the NUS curriculum is. In my first two years, I had the space to try different modules and figure out what I truly enjoyed. The Centre for Future-ready Graduates (CFG) also supported me a lot – through resume reviews, interview prep, and career workshops. As an exco member of the NUS Mathematics Society, I had the chance to collaborate with CFG and co-organise a career sharing session tailored for Mathematics students, which was especially meaningful to me. Outside of that, I also helped organise fun and engaging events like the probleMATHic puzzle competition, sudoku contests, and academic sharing sessions.
To anyone thinking about joining NUS Mathematics: be open to exploring new things, try different paths, and make the most of the many opportunities here. Wishing you all the best in your journey ahead!
