Meet Marcus – A fighter against all odds

Why did you choose to pursue your undergraduate education with NUS Mathematics?

Practically speaking, NUS is the closest university to my home among the local universities HAHAHA! On a more serious note, both my parents graduated from NUS, so a part of me wanted to “continue the legacy”. I’ve always been fascinated by Math and Physics, which made me sit on the fence when choosing my major. Ultimately, I set my mind on Math as I felt it was more versatile and would open more doors for me.

Please describe your most memorable experiences as a student in NUS Mathematics. Did you face any challenges along the way? If so, how did you overcome these challenges?

My first three years in NUS wasn’t the easiest. I had to cope with two deaths in my family (Father and Grandfather), in addition to the change in curriculum due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. My academics hit rock-bottom (on the brink of dismissal from NUS) and I lost all interest in continuing.

Who were the key individuals who supported and guided you throughout your four-year journey at the university? Is there anyone in particular whom you would like to pay tribute to or express your gratitude?

Family and friends of course! They remained supportive of me throughout the years despite the setbacks I faced in life. My mum stayed strong despite what we faced and continued to support me through my university (financially and emotionally). My brothers constantly encouraged me to continue my education, to push through. My partner who taught me how to look forward, to work towards a better future. The list is non-exhaustive, but “paper” is scarce HAHA!

What advice would you offer to fellow students who are keen on choosing NUS Mathematics for their undergraduate education?

Why be “keen on choosing” when you can choose it now? Steady lah! Apply now! Act first, think later!
