Students who are admitted from AY2021/2022 graduate with B.Sc. (Hons) with Major in Data Science & Economics


When referring to the sample study plans and programme requirements, students should follow those that correspond to their year of admission.

The sample study plan serves to help students, especially freshmen, better plan their studies. Please note that DSE is a tight program, students are strongly encouraged to follow the study plan closely especially for the first 2 years. For students who plan to participate in semester-long internship, NUS Overseas College, or Student exchange program, please plan ahead and make sure the graduation requirement can be met after the study plan is modified.

Students are also advised to have some understanding of the prerequisites of the courses they want to read, and to pay due attention to those courses which are prerequisites of other courses in later studies. They may use the NUS Mods for this purpose. This is especially important for students intending to pursue multiple Major/Minor combinations.

It is a student’s responsibility to ensure that the graduation requirements applicable to his/her cohort will be satisfied within the given candidature. As some courses (especially 4000-level elective major requirement courses) are only offered in a single semester every academic year, it is of the student’s interest to have several options for the 4000-level elective major requirement for his/her study plan.    

‎Students are strongly encouraged to complete all CHS Common Curriculum courses in their first two years except for the following course:
 

  • Communities and Engagement – can be taken from Years 2 to 4*


*Important note on workload: Semester vs. Year-long C&E courses

  • Some C&E courses, usually the field/project-work courses, are regular intense 4-Unit courses with work completed within one semester.
  • Other C&E courses, especially the service-work courses, are spread out over two consecutive semesters, or up to one year, that is, Semester 1 through Semester 2 to Special Term 2; or Semester 2 through the Special Terms to Semester 1 of following Academic Year (AY).   • For those students who read the year-long C&E courses which extend till Special Term (during the summer break) after their 8th semester, please note that grades are awarded at the end of Special Term 2, which means your degree will be conferred in end-Aug, and you will join the Commencement ceremony in the following year instead of the same AY of completion of the course.   • As such, students who prefer to take such year-long C&E courses instead of semester-long courses (where the latter might have limited capacity in each semester) are encouraged to plan in advance. You may do so by including the C&E course in your study plan earlier in your candidature; for example, during Year 2 of study.
  • This would allow students to plan for other enrichment programmes (such as Student Exchange programmes, NOC and/or UPIP/Internships) during Year 3 instead of delaying this requirement to Year 4 when students will need to devote time for their job search in the final semester as they complete the remaining graduation requirements.

  1. What are the advices for DSE students on their study plans?

    A: DSE students are strongly advised to complete all 1000-level gateway courses (i.e. DSE1101, EC1101E) in Year 1, and to complete all 2000 and 3000-level major requirement courses by Year 3.

    Do take note on the pre-requisites for DSE3101 and DSA4264:

    In order to graduate in 4 years, DSE students must take DSE3101[1] in Year 3 Sem 2, and thus need to clear all pre-requisites of DSE3101 by Year 3 Sem 1.

    For those who plan to take DSA4264[2] in Year 4, they need to complete EC4308 by Year 3 Sem 2, EC3304 by Year 3 Sem 1, and ST3131 by Year 2 Sem 2.

  2. Any advice for me in choosing my unrestricted electives (UE)?

    A: DSE students are strongly advised to take UEs starting from Year 3 onwards. For the first 2 years, priority should be given to major requirement courses as they comprise important pre-requisites for later compulsory courses and electives.

  3. Any advice for me to take the Undergraduate Professional Internship Programme (UPIP)?

    A: For students considering taking UPIP, we recommend them to take it from their year 3 onwards. Be aware that only one course can be taken together with UPIP.

  4. Any advice for students considering the Student Exchange Programme (SEP)?

    A: A common time for DSE students to go for SEP is in Year 3 Sem 1. Note that only the courses that are conducted 100% in English can be mapped. The EC core courses and DSE courses cannot be mapped.

  5. If I plan to go for SEP, are there any compulsory courses that can be mapped?

    A: Based on past students’ experience, the following courses have been mapped:

    CS2040, MA2311, ST2132, ST3131, DSA2101, DSA2102, DSA3102. Note that course mapping is always subject to approval and availability of courses offered in partner university.

  6. What if I miss DSE3101 due to being on exchange – are there other options available beside taking it in Semester 2 Year 4?

    A: Only students who undertake year-long NUS Overseas College (NOC) programs in Year 3 are allowed to take DSA3101 in Semester 1 Year 4 to fulfil the DSE3101 requirement. For all other cases (e.g., SEP or half-year NOC program), DSE3101 is compulsory and students should plan their courses accordingly.
