Why did you choose to pursue your postgraduate education with NUS Mathematics?

I chose to pursue my postgraduate education in Mathematics at NUS because of its strong reputation as one of Asia’s leading universities, especially in mathematics and quantitative fields. The program offers the opportunity to dive deeply into statistical theories and the quantitative aspects of financial products. This aligns perfectly with my goal of building a strong foundation in various financial products for a career in global markets.

NUS provides an intellectually stimulating environment, surrounded by classmates from diverse backgrounds, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. This diversity broadens my perspectives and enriches my learning experience as I exchange ideas with peers from various fields.

The university’s networking opportunities, seminars, and career guidance resources are also invaluable. They provide exposure to industry leaders and help me stay updated on market trends, equipping me with the skills and connections needed for a successful global career.

Ultimately, studying Mathematics at NUS is the ideal choice for me to build a solid quantitative foundation, expand my professional network, and prepare for my aspirations in the financial world.

I am a Index Equity Products Portfolio Manager at an Asset Management firm.

I engage in portfolio management tasks such as portfolio re-balancing, daily liquidity management, corporate action analysis, risk and performance monitoring.

Please describe your most memorable experiences as a student in NUS Department of Mathematics. Did you face any challenges along the way? If so, how did you overcome these challenges?

One of my most memorable experiences was navigating the unique experience of being a part-time student while juggling both work and studies. This dual commitment was undoubtedly demanding, but it also made my journey incredibly rewarding and filled with valuable lessons.

I really thank my project teammates for the effort to adjust meeting times and deadlines to fit around my work commitments. Late-night discussions, weekend brainstorming sessions, and flexible communication through online platforms became our norm. This collaborative spirit not only allowed me to keep up with the coursework but also fostered a sense of camaraderie that made the experience enjoyable.

Reflecting on this journey, I am immensely grateful for the understanding and cooperation of my peers. Their support not only eased the challenges of juggling work and studies but also enriched my overall experience pursuing for MSc in Quantitative Finance at NUS. This period taught me the value of teamwork, effective communication, and resilience, and it remains a defining chapter of my academic life.

Who were the key individuals who supported and guided you throughout your journey at the university? Is there anyone in particular whom you would like to pay tribute to or express your gratitude?

Definitely my classmates and project mates. They were more than just peers, they became my collaborators, motivators, and friends!

Studying Quantitative Finance can be challenging, and having classmates who were equally driven and passionate made a significant difference. Together, we tackled some of the most complex problem sets and theories, often spending late nights online, dissecting concepts and learning from each other’s methodologies. Their diverse perspectives, enthusiasm, and willingness to help one another not only made learning enjoyable but also shaped my overall university experience in a profound way.

I feel truly fortunate to have been part of such a collaborative and inspiring cohort. They made this journey not just about academic growth but also about forging lifelong friendships.

What advice would you offer to fellow students who are keen on choosing NUS Mathematics for their undergraduate education?

My advice will be to network and collaborate! One of the best parts of NUS is its diverse and talented student body. You’ll learn a lot by interacting with classmates from different academic and cultural backgrounds, so collaborate on projects and don’t be shy about sharing your thoughts. Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to professors, they’re incredibly approachable and willing to guide students. Do also leverage NUS’s resources extensively, such as attending the seminars, workshops, and networking events organized by NUS. These are really fantastic opportunities to learn about industry trends, connect with industry professionals, and gain career guidance!
