At NUS, you can really shape your own journey in learning mathematics. Of course, there’s a regular academic path, but you’re not limited to that—you can always explore more. There are plenty of programs and opportunities available, and it’s up to you to take the initiative. I think it’s super important to try out different areas in math to discover what truly interests you. NUS gave me the chance to do exactly that.
I’ve always aimed to challenge myself. I explored courses from both the Special Programme in Mathematics (SPM) and Computer Science. SPM offers a range of high-quality and rigorous courses that attract many talented and like-minded students. It’s a great environment where you can discuss math freely and dive deep into challenging concepts. And of course, if you choose the right courses, you’ll find out where your limits are—and maybe even enjoy the pressure that comes with it.
At the start, I wasn’t too sure about my future direction—whether I’d go for graduate school or head straight into a career. NUS helped me explore both options. They organized talks on graduate school and also held events with trading firms. Through those experiences, I discovered where my true interests lie. I received my current offer from a Tier-1 hedge fund after winning a competition jointly organized by NUS and that company. NUS really gives you the opportunities to explore your interests and helps build a bridge between you and the real-world workplace.
Keep an open mind, and don’t rush to decide your path before giving yourself the chance to explore what’s out there. NUS offers plenty of opportunities—from research programs to competitions and industry events. Make the most of them, and most importantly, enjoy your university life. Surround yourself with like-minded friends—they’ll become a lifelong treasure.
