These honours reflect the strength of the department’s research across pure and applied mathematics, scientific computing, artificial intelligence, and quantitative finance.
Provost's Chair
Professor Bao Weizhu
Recognised for his internationally distinguished research in Bose–Einstein condensation, computational fluid dynamics, and computational methodologies and software. Prof Bao has published extensively in leading journals and has been invited to speak at ICIAM 2027.
Dean's Chair
Associate Professor An Xinliang
Recognised for his outstanding contributions to mathematical general relativity and partial differential equations, including a major recent single-author paper in the Annals of Mathematics.
Associate Professor Li Qianxiao
Recognised for his contributions to the mathematical foundations of deep learning and scientific machine learning. His research excellence has been recognised through the NRF Fellowship (2021) and the SNAS Young Scientist Award (2024).
Incoming Faculty Appointments
Dr Lénaïc Chizat
Currently Assistant Professor at EPFL, Dr Chizat will join the Department of Mathematics in July 2026 as Associate Professor (with tenure) and will be awarded the Dean’s Chair. His research focuses on the mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Professor Marcel Nutz
Currently Professor at Columbia University, Prof Nutz will join the Department of Mathematics in January 2027 as Full Professor and will be awarded the Provost’s Chair. His research focuses on quantitative finance and optimal transport.
